Ecommerce website design in Auckland
Online stores for New Zealand retailers, built around the checkout rather than the homepage. We start from what makes someone finish an order and work backwards from there.
What you get
- Custom Shopify theme or a headless storefront, depending on what your catalogue needs
- Product, collection and search pages designed for browsing, not just listing
- A checkout tuned for New Zealand: GST handling, local payment methods, real shipping rates
- Integrations with NZ Post, Shippit, Xero, Klaviyo or whatever you already run
- Product schema so your items appear with price and stock in Google results
- Abandoned cart and post-purchase email flows configured, not just installed
- Analytics tracking every step from product view to completed order
Shopify or a custom build
Shopify handles most New Zealand stores well, and we recommend it for the majority of retailers we talk to. It manages payments, tax, inventory and fraud without you paying us to rebuild any of it.
A custom storefront earns its cost in narrower cases: a catalogue with unusual configuration rules, a product that gets quoted rather than added to a cart, a subscription or rental model Shopify's apps handle badly, or a business where the store is one part of a larger platform. Our comparison of Shopify against a custom store sets out where the crossover sits and what each route costs across five years.
We will talk you out of the more expensive option where the cheaper one does the job. A store on the wrong platform costs more in staff hours than it ever saves in build fees.
Designing for the New Zealand shopper
Shipping cost is the single largest reason New Zealand carts get abandoned, and most stores hide it until the final screen. We surface delivery cost and timing on the product page, because a shopper who sees $12 rural freight early either accepts it or leaves before investing ten minutes in a cart.
The rest of the local layer matters too. Prices display GST-inclusive because that is what a New Zealand buyer expects. Payment offers the methods people here actually use, including Afterpay, Laybuy and Apple Pay, alongside cards. Address fields accept New Zealand formats without fighting the shopper over a postcode.
Small details, and together they move completion rates more than a homepage redesign does.
Getting product pages into Google
Product schema, clean URL structure, unique descriptions and images that load fast enough to keep a mobile shopper. We set the technical layer so your products can appear in Google Shopping and in the rich results that carry price and availability.
Category pages do the ranking work for broad terms, so we write real content on them rather than dropping a grid of products under a bare heading. A collection page with 300 words explaining what the range is for outranks a bare grid every time, and it helps the shopper choose.
We also connect your Merchant Center feed and check it accepts every product, which is the step most builds skip and then wonder why nothing appears.
After the store goes live
A store is never finished in the way a brochure site is. Conversion rate moves with what you test, so we set up the analytics to show where orders fall out, then work through the list.
Where it makes sense we hand that list to you and you run it. Where you would rather it stayed with us, we work through it monthly against a fixed number of hours. Either way you see the numbers behind each change rather than an opinion about it.
Common questions
How much does an ecommerce website cost in New Zealand?
It depends on whether Shopify or a headless build fits your catalogue, and how much custom functionality the store needs. We scope it and give you a fixed quote before starting. On top of the build, budget for Shopify's own subscription from US$39 a month and payment processing of roughly 2.4% to 2.9% per order, both set by Shopify rather than us.
Can you migrate my existing store to a new platform?
Yes. We move products, customers, orders and content, then map every old URL to its new equivalent so you keep your search rankings. Migrations from WooCommerce, Magento, Squarespace and BigCommerce are all routine.
Do you set up payments and shipping?
We configure payment providers, GST, shipping zones and live carrier rates as part of the build. You need to complete the merchant applications yourself, since those require your business and bank details, and we walk you through each one.
Which is better for a small NZ store, Shopify or WooCommerce?
Shopify for almost every small New Zealand store. WooCommerce is free to install and then costs you in hosting, plugin licences, security patching and the developer time each of those consumes. Shopify's monthly fee usually works out cheaper once you count the hours.
Can you help with product photography and descriptions?
We write product and collection copy, and we can bring in a photographer for the shoot. Both are quoted separately from the build, since catalogue size changes the number more than anything else does.
